The growth of a Banyan Tree provides a profitable metaphor for the effect of the Word of God in those who read the Holy Scriptures consistently and completely. As a Banyan tree grows, vines descend from its branches taking root in the ground below. Once rooted in the ground below, the vines become trunks supporting further growth of the tree. By constantly expanding its foundation as it matures, Banyan trees sustain extraordinary growth.
Banyan seeds are brought by birds to the branches of other trees. As the seeds sprout and a Banyan tree grows, the host tree and others nearby are smothered and die. The seeds of God's Word are brought by the Spirit of God to men. These seeds sprout in men's hearts. As the seed of God's Word grows, the old man is smothered and dies -- "old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17).
